  1. Get rid of files you don’t need. You may need a maximum of two copies of a document on your hard drive, one copy saved online, and one copy on your Flash USB drive. However, you don’t need dozens of variations of drafts stored in multiple folders on your primary and back-up drives. Get rid of the excess. 
  2. Delete programs you no longer use. If you use it less than once every 90 days, chances are you won’t need it any time soon—with very few exceptions. Maybe it’s a program you just wanted to try, but no longer have a use for it.   4. Stop running so many programs at once. Seriously, give your poor computer a break. If you need to watch Netlix or Hulu while doing your work, maybe get a second device you can use for that purpose. Click on “downloads,” and find the button that deletes all the files you recently acquired online. You can still locate these files in your “downloads” folder (or wherever else you store them). However, they will no longer appear in your temporary Internet files folder once you eliminate them.
  8. Defrag (or optimize) your hard drive. On Windows 7 and earlier, you usually can search for “defrag to pull up the disk defragmenter. You can do similar on Windows 8, only you’d be better off searching for “optimize” or “optimize drive.” Either way, when you click on the appropriate option after searching, you can follow the prompts to complete the defrag/optimize process.   9. Physically clean out the insides. Get a screwdriver, and find out how to take the back plate off your laptop or how to remove the side wall from your desktop tower. Then, use a spray air cleaner to push air out of your CPU and front (or side) cooling fans. Remove as much of the dust from it as you can.
